About Janaka Ruiz
I was born and raised in Mexico City at a time of political and cultural reawakening. As a child, my teachers would take us to see Rivera's, Siqueiros's Orozco's murals as well as Tamayo's paintings. I was also enchanted by the works of Frida Kalho and Remedios Varo and was exposed to the astonishing beauty of the works of Meso-American artists and craftsmen.
As an adult, I was transported when I first saw Hiroshige's wood cuts, from there I explored Asian art. Also, I resonated with the color and style of Maxfield Parrish. I attended the Woodstock School of Art in Woodstock, NY where I studied Structured Drawing and Painting. My studies in Graphic Design at UC Berkeley Extension has made a mark in my artwork by using technology and design principles in my creative process. I learned watercolor at Merritt College in Oakland and continue learning and practicing figure drawing at Merritt College. Al of those early influences and my wonderful teachers have brought me to where I am today.
My creative work takes shape through different media including watercolors, fluid acrylics, figure drawing, photography, graphic design, and even gardening! My legal first name is Javier but I sign my artwork as Janaka, which is my artistic-spiritual name. Please visit often to stay in touch and see my most recent work.
